Empty Nest at New Year’s

Looking back on another year
should have been somebody else
Everything’s so quiet here
never been so by myself

But the osprey took her leave long ago
from the house on the riverbank

There’s never gonna be a way back
away, go away
‘Cause nothing ever really stays
so away, go away
Still, the river will rise
as the snow melts away
someday

See the dust on the window sill
in the tactless winter light
See the snow all crisp and still
no new tracks this winter night

Let the osprey still recall her summer home
by the house on the riverbank

There’s never gonna be a way back
away, go away
‘Cause nothing ever really stays
so away, go away
Still, the river will rise
as the snow melts away
someday

Bay windows and chandeliers
Everybody say goodbye in here
Make the entry way an exit wound
Ring the rusted bell alarm
Find the heart and burn the farm
Like a thief, the time is coming soon

There’s never gonna be a way back
away, go away
‘Cause nothing ever really stays
so away, go away
Still, the river will rise
as the snow melts away
someday
